Online NFL Betting: Seattle Seahawks at Cleveland Browns (10/23)

October 23rd, 2011

PRO FOOTBALL — October 23

SEATTLE at CLEVELAND
(Online NFL Betting Odds: Browns -3, Total 41) — Interesting angle here, as obviously Mike Holmgren was the head of Seattle’s football operation before joining up with the Browns. The Seahawks are going with Charlie Whitehurst as the starting quarterback, and he is the guy Pete Carroll seems to have faith in, although Whitehurst has not done a lot to justify that faith (57.6%, 3 TD, 3 INT as a Seahawk). We would concede that on offense the ‘hawks have better talent, by and large, but even as they get back Robert Gallery at guard, they have inexperience on the offensive line, and center Max Unger will miss this game, as will tight end Zach Miller. Seattle confounded us wit its road win against the Giants, although we still don’t consider them to be anything to trust.

Cleveland’s Colt McCoy is averaging 5.5 yards an attempt, and there is nothing particularly threatening on the Browns’ side. The internal problems surrounding Peyton Hillis have taken on almost a comical nature, but if you recall last year, he constituted a high percentage of their offensive output and there is doubt as to whether he is even interested in playing until he is settled on a new contract. Monterio Hardesty has been in his place, but can’t catch anything thrown to him. Cleveland has failed to cover its last seven at home. In this one, it may be easier to pick a loser than a winner.

Online NFL Betting: Jacksonville Jaguars at Pittsburgh Steelers (10/16)

October 16th, 2011

PRO FOOTBALL — October 16

JACKSONVILLE at PITTSBURGH
(Online NFL Betting Odds: Steelers -12.5, Total 40.5) — Has Jack Del Rio committed career suicide? He was given an ultimatum by owner Wayne Weaver to make the playoffs or else, and he proceeded to cut a veteran quarterback (David Garrard) and place his bets on a rookie (Blaine Gabbert). Gabbert has talent, but there is a long way to go; he has completed less than 50% of his passes. That means the Jags have to depend more on the run, and the Steelers, who held Chris Johnson to just 51 yards last Sunday, feel they may be coming along in the area of defending the run, as nose tackle Casey Hampton is expected back from injury. Rashard Mendenhall may be back as well for this banged-up Pittsburgh squad, which got a 784-yard run out of Georgia Tech alum Jonathan Dwyer last week. Ben Roethlisberger had to play last week with a special shoe to protect a foot injury, and all he did was throw for five touchdowns against the Titans. Can J-Ville keep pace with the rookie at the helm?

Online NFL Betting: Cincinnati Bengals at Jacksonville Jaguars (10/9)

October 9th, 2011

PRO FOOTBALL — October 9

CINCINNATI at JACKSONVILLE
(Online NFL Betting Odds: Bengals -1, Total 37) — In the last three games, Jacksonville has totaled slightly over 700 yards on offense. And the Jaguars are not going to cover many games when they’re averaging under ten points. The Bengals have struggled as well, but in this matchup of rookies, Andy Dalton is further along the learning curve than Blaine Gabbert, an early entrant into the NFL draft who has been just 48% accurate thus far. The guy who has been holding the fort down for the Jags, Maurice Jones-Drew, is absolutely legit (5.1 ypc), but Cincinnati has a real live defense (allowing just over three yards a rush) and could conceivably be 4-0 right now. Remember, they upset Buffalo’s applecart last week. Looking to the “under’ may be a way to go, but right now the Bengals have their act together a little more on both sides of the ball.

JAY’S PLAY: CINCINNATI -1 **

Online NFL Betting: San Francisco 49ers at Philadelphia Eagles (10/2)

October 2nd, 2011

PRO FOOTBALL — October 2

SAN FRANCISCO at PHILADELPHIA
(Online NFL Betting Odds: Eagles -9.5, Total 43.5) — Michael Vick, who broke his non-throwing hand last week, is expected to play with some form of protection. While he won;t be affected, in all likelihood, in the way he can throw the football, he won’t take as many chances running it. That may be a blessing in disguise for the Eagles, who possess quite a bit more firepower. There has been some talk about the difficulty Nnamdi Asamougha has had adjusting to the Eagles’ defensive scheme, but can that be sufficiently threatened by Alex Smith and the Niners?

Why hasn’t Frank Gore been able get loose? Probably because opponent shave been able to concentrate on stopping the run, and daring Smith to throw the ball. Jim Harbaugh can’t be unhappy with the fact that Smith has completed 69%, and tossed just one pickoff, and we do already know that the Eagles are overrated and that you have to pay a premium price if you want to back them. However, we do expect them to respond in a big way after losing two games in a row - one of them to a division rival (the Giants). If they can’t produce, we’ll know what to expect in the near future.

JAY’S PLAY: PHILADELPHIA -9.5 **

Online NFL Betting: Pittsburgh Steelers at Indianapolis Colts (9/25)

September 24th, 2011

PRO FOOTBALL — September 25

PITTSBURGH at INDIANAPOLIS
(Online NFL Betting Odds: Steelers -10, Total 39.5) — Pittsburgh responded last week, albeit against Seattle, which demonstrates that the Steelers are not without a degree of intensity. They will likely meet with an intense effort from that Indianapolis defense, but that defense is going to be spending a lot of time on the field. When you talk about the Steelers, you are talking about a team that is going to come with a lot of blitzes, and that might be a bit much for Kerry Collins and this Indy offensive unit, which isn’t able to do the kinds of adjustments at the line of scrimmage that they have gotten used to. Can they balance things up with a running game that has often failed the Colts in the recent past? That’s key, because this team has converted only five times on third down. Collins is a veteran, but let’s not forget that he was ready to retire when summoned to training camp, and the Colts don’t have attractive options in reserve. He’s just 51% accurate, and he’s turned it over four times (one INT, three fumbles).

JAY’S PLAY: PITTSBURGH -10 **
